Discover Goat's

Walking into Goat's for the first time at 2017 Devine St, Columbia, SC 29205, United States feels like stepping into a place that already knows you. I stopped by on a busy Friday evening after hearing several local reviews rave about the comfort food and relaxed vibe, and within minutes it was clear why this diner keeps popping up in conversations around town. The staff greeted me like a regular, even though it was my first visit, and that easygoing hospitality set the tone for the entire meal.

The menu is where this place really shows its personality. While many diners play it safe, this one leans into bold flavors and thoughtful combinations. One server explained how the kitchen slow-simmers its signature dishes for hours, a process borrowed from traditional Southern techniques that prioritize patience and depth of flavor. I ordered the slow-cooked goat curry after being told it’s one of the most talked-about items in customer reviews. The meat was tender, richly spiced, and balanced with just enough heat to keep things interesting without overwhelming the palate.

Having worked briefly in restaurant kitchens during college, I tend to notice workflow and consistency, and Goat's impressed me on both counts. Orders moved steadily despite the packed dining room, and plates came out looking identical from table to table. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident. According to the National Restaurant Association, restaurants that standardize prep methods see up to 30 percent less food waste and higher customer satisfaction, and you can feel that professionalism at work here.

Beyond the goat-focused specialties, the menu offers familiar diner classics with subtle twists. The sides are clearly not afterthoughts. I watched another table dive into crispy fries paired with a house-made dipping sauce, while a nearby family shared a platter that included seasonal vegetables sourced from nearby farms. The server mentioned that supporting local suppliers helps keep flavors fresh and costs steady, a practice encouraged by organizations like the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association.

What stood out most during my visit was how approachable the experience felt. Goat's isn’t trying to be flashy or trend-driven. Instead, it builds trust by doing the basics right, from clean tables to clearly labeled menu items that make dietary choices easy. For diners curious about goat meat but unsure where to start, this is an ideal introduction. The USDA reports that goat meat consumption has steadily increased in the U.S. over the past decade, largely due to diners seeking leaner protein options, and this restaurant makes that transition feel natural rather than intimidating.

Reviews from locals often mention the relaxed atmosphere, and I’d agree. Conversations flow easily here, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for a longer dinner. I overheard a couple discussing how they stop by after work at least once a week because they know exactly what they’re getting: reliable food, fair prices, and friendly faces. That kind of loyalty says more than any advertisement ever could.

To be fair, the space can feel a bit snug during peak hours, and parking on Devine Street requires some patience. Still, those minor inconveniences fade quickly once the food arrives. For anyone exploring Columbia’s dining locations or searching for a spot that blends comfort, character, and thoughtful cooking, Goat's earns its reputation one plate at a time.

  • Eclectic, bohemian vibe. Fantastic cocktails and great draft selection. Our server, Hope, was fantastic and helpful. Normally we would never choose a Philly cheesesteak but did on her recommendation. Truly delicious and large enough to split. Garlic fries were excellent, as well.

  • I love this place. The atmosphere is perfect and the food always good. Desert, especially cheese cakes are the best. The best place to chill out and spend fun time with friends.

  • I love just sitting in Goat's - add the German beer selection AND one of the best meals I have in years - wow! Goat's currently my favorite meal on the earth - Beef Borguignon! You need to sell 1 gallon take out containers! I would also add I have paid more for less tasty food at fast food places - $19 for a great entree and $17 for 2.desserts - bargain!

  • An old and classic place you should visit. Great drinks, delicious foods, and warm people. Higher end, so if you’re dressed up, come here. The bartenders know their drinks and if you are into older cocktails with history, they have those too.

  • Super cool place. Great deco, cool art on walls. My cucumber margarita was excellent (and so was the second). Good music (jazz, rnb), vibe is super chill. We had apps and drinks and will totally come back next time we're in Columbia.

  • The Philly cheese steak is bangin'! The staff is so friendly and the owner is more than happy to come over, recommend some wine and chat for a bit. The decor is sultry and cozy. Great for a large group or a romantic date night. Updated review: Feb 2024. Came here for a drink and an appetizer around 730 on a Saturday evening. Even though it was busy, the service was friendly and prompt and the food was served in a timely manner. We had the duck poutine and it was delicious. This cocktail bar continues to be one of our go-to spots for a sexy date-night that boasts an impressive wine menu and satisfying comfort food.

  • Just a few words to gush about our server last night. She memorizes orders, listens, and is gorgeously hippie. The door never stayed clear and they kept turning tables and were seemingly in the weeds, however the stress never showed for our server. She is a true professional.

  • From the atmosphere including surrealist artwork, overhead lighting and a beautiful long aquarium with an small array of fish to the attentive staff and satisfying spread of dishes, I would recommend this spot to anyone swinging through town for a whimsical vibe. Note: If you're ordering from the bar and looking for king cubes, they unfortunately do not have any available, but the drinks are made very well regardless.
